Craftsman Truck Series

Immediate popularity of prototype NASCAR pickup trucks sparked the interest that formed an entirely new racing competition. The Craftsman Truck Series, which was originally named the SuperTruck Series, is one of the three divisions of NASCAR. Rule changes that apply to this specific event make it drastically different than the other two divisions while still maintaining the same basic racing principle.

Since the very beginning, the tracks were shorter compared to the NEXTEL and BUSCH series. As a way to conserve funding, extra tires were limited and pit stops were removed completely. This was due to the lack of track space necessary to make a pit stop safely for a team to work on some problems as the race is in full motion. Instead, a break will be given for a brief period where changes can be made at the driver's discretion.

Tire changes were only done for safety reasons so that there would not be waste and also to add a new spin on the competition. Drivers had to learn to conserve their tires, and only had a maximum of two changes possible. A big advantage was given to NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series drivers who learned to cut down on pit stops when competing in other divisions. Pit stops were added in eventually, but only for fuel and other truck adjustments with the exception of tires.

It was not until the middle of 1998 when the rules changed to allow for two tires to be changed during limited pit stops. At the time when four tires could be changed, the same limit of sets would still be applied to avoid too much deviation from the original rules of the Craftsman Truck Series.
